John graduates

November 20, 2012

On Friday, Nov. 16th, 2012 John officially became a chiropractor.  His graduation marks the end of a long journey through higher education, including a Bachelor’s of Psychology, two years of prerequisite science courses while I worked on my Master’s degree, and 3 1/3 years of chiropractic school! Through this time, I’ve been witness to the full days of school followed by evenings of studying, the endless memorization of Harry Potter-esque terminology and hellish final exams, the first hesitant (and painful!) adjustments, and now the incredibly competent, skilled work he does for his patients, literally restoring life and health to people! It hasn’t been easy, by any stretch of the imagination, but it has been good, and it is where we were supposed to be. Words cannot express how proud I am of his accomplishments!

On graduation morning, I filled John’s car with balloons, and in each balloon was a note from a friend or family member. Yes, I blew up 25+ balloons one by one. Yes, I felt very winded and dizzy afterward. No, I do not recommend this method. Recruit a friend or get a pump!

He was SO surprised and thrilled by all of the messages. We had a great afternoon popping the balloons and reading through each of the messages. Thanks to all who contributed!

The graduation took place at the St. Paul River Center, and despite a dismal commencement speaker (using the microphone to push a political agenda, anyone?), it was a terrific event. The highlight, of course, was watching John receive his hood.

We had guests from across the country turn up for the event: John’s parents from the East Coast, his Aunt Barbara from the West Coast, and my family up from Iowa.

Could not be prouder of Dr. John!

We finished out the weekend with a trip to the Minnesota History Center, a celebration lunch at Brasa, a tour of John’s place of work, dinner and desserts at our place, and on Sunday, church and a fantastic view from the Guthrie Theater.

So what’s next for us? For the short term, John will be working as an Associate Chiropractor at True Chiropractic, where he completed his T9 and T10 internships. The owner, Dr. Jason Wing Louie, is John’s mentor and a coach for all of the students practicing the Gonstead system of chiropractic.  And after that? You’ll just have to stay tuned!
